  • LOME, TOGO - 12-10-05   -  Akoe Tchakponou covers her face in chalk powder in an attempt to lessen the effects of tear gas as protesters clash with police in Lomé on October 5. A peaceful protest was scheduled by opposition groups, but their route was blocked by police.  For months, opposition parties have been calling for the departure of president Faure Gnassingbe, whose family has been in power for over 40 years.   Photo by Daniel Hayduk

  • 12-06-07  TOGO - Afi Ouro (name changed), 13, in a room of her family compound in her  village near Sokodé, Togo, on June 7. Ouro and her family were ostracized when she was born with bilateral club foot and epilepsy.  After surgery and medication from Plan Togo, she is able to walk to school and not fear seizures .   • LOME, TOGO  13-05-31   -  Kodjo Afate Gnikou and his $100 US 3D printer W.AFATE, which is largely made of e-waste, in Lome, Togo on May 31, 2013. Gnikou dreams of sending a larger version to Mars to print tools and homes for future colonizations. "They all say it is merely a dream and it will never happen," says Gnikou, pointing out that there are already robots on Mars. "I really want my 3D printer to be the first on Mars so people can say it was an African who had the idea to put a 3D printer on Mars."  Photo by Daniel Hayduk

  • Helmi Lowen, 71, and her husband Kornelius, 78, farm several acres of land in the Okanagan Valley. With only three years of elementary education under her belt, Lowen's natural, chemical free produce is nearly all spoken for before it is planted. "I get bored very quickly.".
